4 Positions Left Vacant in UPEISU 2018 Fall Election

At the end of the nomination period on Wednesday, September 19, it became official: nobody filled out an application to run for Nursing Representative, Education Representative, Veterinary Medicine Representative, or Accessibility Representative in the UPEI Student Union’s fall election.
Colton Profitt, Chair of council, has confirmed that this has happened before.
“There is no policy or bylaw to refer to in regards to this. However, the precedent would be that there will be an appointment made by council to make sure these areas do not go unrepresented or a by-election could be called.”
The details of how that will play out will be discussed by council this Sunday, September 23.
“The SU is committed to pursuing its efforts to fill the vacant positions,” Profitt says. “Staff, council, and executives of the SU will continue to encourage students in these areas to fill the open positions.”
Chief Returning Officer Jose Gonzalez says that there are several possible solutions to this problem: appointing experienced students to the positions, extending the nomination period for all vacant positions, or holding a by-election.
