2021 Met Gala: Looks You Need To See

By Emma MacKinlay and Jonathan Rodriguez

September 13th, 2021, The Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted an A-list celebrity fashion event. Many famous actors, models, singers, and social media influencers showed up in amazing glam. This year’s theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” brought out many celebrities who met the mark and served some amazing looks, and others who fell below the standard.

Top 5 Best Dressed:

1. Billie Eilish

This was Billie’s first Met Gala. Surprisingly, she was also chosen to be one of this year’s co-chairs, alongside Amanda Gorman, Timothee Chalamet, and Naomie Osaka. Billie served very much old Hollywood, Marilyn Monroe vibes. Her beautiful blush pink gown was designed by Oscar de la Renta. She looked beautiful and elegant, a side we never usually get to see from Billie. She was a front runner in the best-dressed category for the Met.

2. Lil Nas X

What a performer! Lil Nas X copying Lady Gaga with a three set outfit, he killed it though. We first see Nas emerge in a beautiful gold cape, only to be surprised by a gold suit of armour underneath, and finally a gold and black suit that showed off what his mama gave him. This is Nas’ first Met Gala and he definitely made a statement. The three piece set was designed by Donatella Versace and he definitely deserved his spot on the guestlist.

3. Maluma

Stunning in red, Maluma killed this year’s Met with Donatella Versace. Sexy in leather Maluma paired the red with a chainmail like tank top, he was jeweled up with fabulous gloves. This outfit was perfectly made for Maluma and outshined Donatella herself; he was cool, calm, and sexy on the Met Gala carpet.

4. Jennifer Lopez

The only celebrity to fully embrace the theme, giving HOUSTON, TEXAS BABY! Lopez wore a beautiful brown gown designed by Ralph Lauren, she paired it with a beautiful blue shawl and a very fitting cowboy hat. J-Lo never fails to impress. She looks elegant in everything she wears even if it’s ranch gear, she could wrangle some cows together and still show up flawless.

5. Frank Ocean

MR. M.I.A. coming back to the Met to grace us with his presence. Frank Ocean is always a favourite at the Met, this year wearing his own brand Homer x Prada with his beautiful Shrek baby, Cody. Recently we have been getting more appearances from Frankie, green hair = new album?!?!?!?!??!!?! Hopefully!

Top 5 Worst Dressed:

1. Naomi Osaka

A first for Naomi, she was also invited to be a co-chair at the event. Her dress was designed by Louis Vuitton with aid from Osaka’s older sister Mari. This look is first on our worst dressed list for many reasons. It may be an empowering piece speaking of Osaka’s heritage, but girl, that hair-do?, she ended up looking like Cynthia from Rugrats.

2. Tracy Ellis Ross

Edna Mode making an appearance at the met gala this year is a win in my books. Lacking the bravado and Icon status Edna Mode has, Tracy Ellis Ross is wearing a steel blue shower gown made by late Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta, who is best known for styling Jaqueline Kennedy back in the day. This might be the nicest shower gown I’ve seen but not gala worthy.

3. Kim Kardashian

Dementors in broad daylight? Kim wore a blacked out body-suit inspired by the support she has for Kanye’s DONDA album. Even though they are now divorced, they are a better duo than the Taco Bell and KFC collab. This gown was made by the longtime family friend Demna Gavalsia at Balenciaga, who recently released a collection with Fortnite?! I mean I like some of the Balenciaga pieces, but what do they know about Fortnite? Anyways, this look was definitely a talking piece in regard to all the current events happening in the fashion industry.

4. ASAP Rocky

After the recently announced relationship between ASAP and Rihanna, they haven’t been seen apart. They love to lounge around lavishly, but since you can’t always have a bed around, you have to bring the bed with you. Both of these looks are puffy and flamboyant like comforters. ASAP’s looks like my gramma’s and RiRi’s looks like my goth roommate’s favourite blanket. ASAP’s fit is made by Eli Russell Linnetz or ERL who is the new kid on the block and Kanye’s protégé. Overall, a comfy fit but like where do you actually wear this except to the gala?

5. Natalia Bryant

I guess the met gala really is a party, they even brought their own disco ball, paper mache Piñata vibes. I mean I do guess this is a conversation starter about Connor Ives’ flowy comfy silhouettes, but why did they have to do Nat so dirty c’mon? I’m digging the 1960’s pompadour hairstyle but not the fit. Also did y’all know Connor is only 21 years old and he already has a dress in the met gala? Respect. Kinda. The dress is ugly tho.
