Last week students from around the world gathered to celebrate the diversity of cultures represented at UPEI.
On Friday students piled into MacMillan Hall to learn about and immerse themselves in many different cultures at the 2019 UPEI Global Village.
Booths were placed around the perimeter of the hall with displays representing the many different cultures found at UPEI.
Many representatives offered treats from their respective countries. Others also included cultural activities at their tables, including handwriting, traditional clothing, games, and listening to music.
The event held a fundraiser for the Rotaract, henna was also done in return for donations.
There was also a speech given by professor, Dr. Sobia Ali, who moved the crowd with her words. She spoke about accepting the diversity we encounter.
“Moving from simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the diversity contained in each individual.†Dr. Ali said in closing.
One booth that had an abundance of energy and excitement was Bangladesh. A Cadre reporter spoke to one of the representatives.
UPEI student Ayesha Munir of Bangladesh reflected on her feelings for the event.
“I think Global Village is a beautiful place for all the cultures, ethnicities, countries, and everyone to come together and be one and be united.â€
Munir was happy to represent her country at the event.
“[It’s a place] for us to represent ourselves as individuals and as a country. So I think it’s beautiful and this should go on.â€
The event held performances all evening, including dancing, musical performances, and more. The performances were full of talent and showed off aspects of the cultures on stage.
The room was full of excited people of all ages for the entirety of the event.
