With Halloween around the corner and student budgets taking a toll, do-it-yourself costumes are a budget-friendly way to make a costume. If you want to try making your own costume but don’t know what to do we have created a list of easy and impressive homemade costumes.

Queen/King of Hearts

Red clothes, a deck of cards, and a crown are all you need for this classic and easy costume. Different costumes have glued the cards together into a collar, you could also glue and cut the cards into a crown to lower the cost of the costume. Bow ties, red heart lipstick, and other heart decals can add to the costume.

Old Person

This costume is great for one person or for a group. Bring out your oldest pyjamas, a robe, glasses, slippers, and perhaps a mug for your morning coffee. For long hair, you can even add the classic roller look. You can add more details to this look, including grey hair through hair chalk, coloured hairspray, or a wig.

Arthur

Blue jeans, yellow sweater, white collared shirt, round glasses, and some ears are the essentials to this costume. Red and white shoes can add to this look. The ears can be homemade from construction paper and a cheap headband. You can even put your hand in a fist and make it a meme.

Bob Ross and a painting

A button-up, dark blue jeans, a beard and big curly hair it the essentials to a Bob Ross look. Adding a paint palette and brush give the costume an extra detail. You can even bring a friend as your painting. An oversized white shirt with a painting on it will work great to be a painting. The painting on your shirt can even be done yourself, or bring fabric markers with you and get other people to draw on you.

Queen Bee

A yellow and black striped shirt or dress added with a crown and antennae are all you need to be the Queen Bee this Halloween.

Nerd

Put on some suspenders, glasses, white shirt tucked into your pants and you are a nerd. Bring a calculator and you can add that extra detail. Rolled up pants with tall white socks will especially add to your costume.

Gumball Machine

All you need to do for this one is glue pom-poms to white a shirt in a circle and put a ‘25 cents’ label and you are good to go. You can add more detail as you like. Red pants/shorts/skirt go well with the iconic gumball machine look.

Deviled Egg

A white shirt with a yellow felt yolk glued on makes you an egg. Want to take that up a notch? Add horns and a devil tail and become a deviled egg.

Pig in a Blanket

Pig nose and ears, made similarly to Arthur’s ears, and a large blanket wrapped around you makes you a pig in a blanket. You could also wear pink and simply be a pig, or wear pink and darker pink stripes and be Piglet.

Mouse

“Put some mouse ears on and wear all black and you’ll be a mouse… duh”
