Booze Panel: Cadre reviews Fox and Crow cocktails

The Cadre

UPEI’s campus bar, the Fox and Crow, not only has some excellent food, but also some unique and tasty cocktails. While many UPEI students may be busy with midterms and projects to party hard, the Fox and Crow’s drink menu still has many drinks you can unwind with after a long day of class.

But which drink to try? The Fox and Crow has a drink for everyone, but it’s important to know what you’re getting into before you take a sip.

That’s where the Cadre comes in. We did the hard work of trying all of the Fox and Crow cocktails for you. For those of you who are a little apprehensive, have no fear, we’ve provided some of our thoughts on each drink. With our testimony, hopefully, you can find the right cocktail for you.

PEI Mule

Southern comfort, ginger beer, mint, and lime

If you like ginger you’re going to love this drink. The drink has a refreshing hint of mint and lime with a very strong ginger taste. Reading the ingredients beforehand, we weren’t to sure about this one, but in the end we really enjoyed it. Might be a good choice if you aren’t feeling well, the PEI Mule has a soft, light start and a ginger kick after.

“It reminds me of real ginger ale with a twist.”

The Sly Fox

Gin, elderflower liqueur, tonic water, and cucumber

If you don’t like sugary drinks this will be your favourite on the menu. Gin and tonic with a healthy and refreshing twist. Starts off like a normal G&T, but the elderflower liqueur adds a unique, semi-floral taste. We found it very refreshing. If tonic isn’t your thing, you might want to consider asking for 7up with this instead.

“Like a G&T went frolicking through a meadow.”

Lady Crow

Gin, peach schnapps, lemon & lime soda

By far the best smelling drink on the menu, it is a very sugary and delicious drink. The peach taste is strong very and reminiscent of fuzzy peaches. It’s soft and sweet and tastes like candy. It’s pretty easy to forget that there’s booze in this one. If you turn 19 on a Tuesday and you want to get your first legal drink between classes, this is your safest (and tastiest) bet.

“This crow won’t steal your lunch, but this lady might steal your man”

Foxy Fizz

Vodka, apple juice, lemon & lime soda

After reading the menu this was the drink we were most excited for as we’re all big apple juice fans. This drink delivered. It is very much a fizzy apple juice, hiding the taste of vodka very well. It’s not an intense fizz in this drink though, it’s more of an underlying fizz.

“This drink is big kid apple juice, if you know what I mean.”

Panther Punch

Melon liqueur, banana liqueur, lemon & lime soda

The banana and melon flavours mix well to create a very interesting and fruity mix. Again, this is a very sugary drink, but not as sweet as the previous options. Smells exactly like banana too. The mix is one that we could see making a good ice cream flavour, but you really have to like bananas.

“The drink is a sweet, but not over-the-top, Shrek coloured dessert.”

Just Peachy

Peach schnapps, vanilla vodka, lemon & lime soda

After trying them all, this is probably our favourite drink on the menu. As the name implies, Just Peachy has a very peachy taste, but less sugary than the Lady Crow. It is good for someone who is looking for a less sugary drink but still wants a stronger flavour than the Lady Crow. Though ingredients are similar to Lady Fox, it has a completely different taste. To our surprise, the peach and vanilla work great together, definitely give this one a try.

“Like the Lady Crow took a vacation. More relaxed.”

Look No Feather

Gin, raspberry sourpuss, lime, ginger ale

Another very good fruity drink; it smells and tastes just like swedish berries. A good choice for any candy lover. This drink will bring you back to your childhood with a bulk candy store body and a boozy, slightly sour twist. Very pretty and baby, you can taste the sourpuss. As the name implies, this is the one.

“Like liquid candy.”

Killer Caw-Aid

Vodka, melon liqueur, Disaronno, cranberry juice

This drink got great reviews from all of us. Killer Caw-Aid reminded us of a candy but at first we couldn’t put our fingers on exactly which one. Eventually, we came to the realization that tastes and smells just like a cherry jolly rancher. We were a little apprehensive based on the ingredients, but this one is a winner. The Disaronno adds a perfect, rich flavour which works with the lightness of the melon and the sour cranberry juice.

“Really h*cking good.”

BONUS

White Freezie

Raspberry sourpuss, banana liqueur, lemon & lime soda

A classic from last year. It’s not on the menu anyone but they can still make it, we recommend to ask for it. It tastes vaguely like a white airhead. It’s vibrant orange colour hides a pretty soft, mellow sweetness that tastes way different than the ingredients would indicate. With all the other candy tasting drinks on the menu this one may be overlooked, but the White Freezie can hold its own.

“It took us 10 minutes to realise it taste like an airhead.”
