What You May Have Missed Over The Break

By Fairouz Gaballa

2020 has been a wild year and it did not stop while UPEI was on holiday break. Here is some news you may have missed while on break.

Donald Trump got banned from major platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat after Pro-Trump rioters raided the U.S.Capitol.

The U.S Capitol was raided by Pro-Trump supporters while Congress was in the process of certifying the 2020 election and Joe Biden’s presidency. Somehow the Pro-Trump supports managed to get past security and into Capitol, and they didn’t even get peper sprayed, shot at, or attacked, like the people during the Black Lives Movement did. Also, Donald Trump did not call them looters or rioters, he simply told them to go home because he loves them.

In a statement Twitter released they said: “After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence”.

Uighurs continue to have their human rights stripped away in China’s Xinjiang region while prisoned in internment and “re-education” camps.

Uighurs are a minority in Xinjiang since they are Muslims. What is mainly believed is that the Chinese government took the Uighurs into camps for forced labour, torture, and many other things. However, China denies the fact that the camps are cruel and basically says the camps exist to teach Uighurs how to be peaceful and not become terrorists. However, at the Cadre, we strongly disagree that the camps are peaceful since there are widespread witnesses who state the camps are violent. Sadly, none of this is making major headlines.

2020 was tied as the hottest year on record with 2016. That’s not a shock considering climate change. For more information check out this article by CBC.

On a positive note, Harry Styles released a music video for his song, “Treat People With Kindness”.

If you haven’t already, you can watch the video here.

The COVID-19 Vaccines were approved and arrived. Some doses of the vaccine were already administered on PEI.
