In the first of its kind event, UPEI Student Union staff opened their offices to show the student body what exactly their jobs entail.
On January 27th and January 30th, UPEISU held the first ever “Take Your Students to Work Day.†From 2-4pm, students got to see their executive team at work.
“Take Your Students to Work Day†was inspired by the common ‘take your kids to work day’ type events many of us participated in as kids.
Sweta Daboo, UPEISU Vice President Academic and External, told the Cadre that their event was more casual and informative.
“Take Your Students to Work Day is an open-house style event where we invite students to visit the UPEISU offices and have a glimpse into what the day-to-day of our executives and office staff typically looks like,†she said.
While the event only garnered a small crowd, Daboo says this is the first event of its kind and has room to grow in the future.
While attending the event students were given an office tour and a brief introduction of UPEISU services. The students were welcome to have conversations with any/all members of the executive team. Students were invited to offer feedback or constructive criticism.
“This furthermore allows students to better connect with the UPEISU. While executives and councillors try to be on the ground as much as possible, this is a chance to invite students into our space.†Daboo told the Cadre.
While in the office’s students were able to see unfiltered behind-the-scenes work and ask questions.
“This is part of a ‘demystification’ process that we are engaged in to give students a better idea of what their elected representatives do on the daily to effectively work for them,†Daboo said.
While the first ‘Take Your Students to Work Day’ has finished, the UPEISU offices are open every week-day from 9am-4pm. At least one member of staff and executive will always be around to answer questions.
