UPEI security wants to remind everyone to keep track of their belongings and take precautions after they see an increase in items reported stolen this semester.

Mark Pharand, Manager of UPEI Security and Police Services, told the Cadre that increase in reported thefts have most occured in the gym area.

UPEI Security consists of security attendants and campus police which are responsible for enforcing both parking regulations and dealing with criminal incidents on campus.

“We enforce the criminal code and provincial statutes like the Highway Traffic Act and the Liquor Control Act on campus,” Pharand said.

Pharand says that to protect their valuables students should remember to never leave anything unattended.

“If we just take a couple more seconds to think about if we took everything with us, or if I’m going to go to the stacks to look for a book did I take my valuables with me,” he said.

“Don’t leave your mobile device out in the open or things like that, just take a second to think about that.”

Pharand also wanted to remind everyone to bring a lock with them if they go to the gym, adding that it’s only a small investment.

“If it’s unlocked, people may go in and rifle through your things.”

He ended by reminding everyone that it’s always important to know that your personal items are either on you or in a secure place.

“Just remember that your personal items may be wanted by somebody so keep track of where they’re at.”

If you ever need to report anything to campus police you can 902-566-0384 at any time of day or download the UPEI Safe App. In the event of an emergency always call 911 first.
