Council Recap: Low turnout sees SU looking to appoint Councillors

By Ben Macintosh

In a unanimous vote, UPEISU decided that five seats on council will be filled by appointment following no candidates running in those positions. Council voted unanimously in favour of filling the positions via an appointment process at the last student council meeting on Oct. 6.

The Engineering Rep., Residence Rep., Veterinary Medicine Rep., and the Graduate Student Senate Rep. will all be filled by appointment. The Board of Governors Rep. will also be filled by appointed following Owen Shaw’s resignation effective after the Oct. 6 council meeting.

President Emma Drake explained to council the reason for filling these positions is due to no students running during the election.

Arts Rep. Malak Nassar asked why these positions might not permanently be filled by appointment if interest has remained low.

Drake said council wants to encourage students to run for these positions in future elections, despite low interest.
The SU is looking for students to apply for the available positions, more details on applying will be available soon.

New councillors took part in their first council meeting in their new positions since the Oct. 2 SU elections. New councillors include; First Year Rep. David Reyes, Arts Rep. Malak Nassar, Science Rep. Jennifer Susan Stewart, Graduate Student Rep. Brooks Roche, and Mathematics and Computational Science Rep. Hassan Itani.

Vice President of Student Life Tessa Rogers told council during her report that Mental Health Mondays will be moved to the third Monday of each month, so as to not be on the same day as Music Mondays. The mental health Monday for October will now be on the 21st. Music Mondays will continue to be the first Monday of every month.

Council also voted unanimously in favour of ratifying the Bangladesh Student Association.

Next council meeting will be on Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. in room 328 of McDougall hall.
