Back 2 school pub sees higher profits: council recap

By Ben Macintosh

The UPEISU’s pub event saw a bigger profit compared to last year’s event thanks in part to lower expenses.

Vice-President of Finance and Administration Keesha Ryan presented the Back to School pub expenses during the Sept. 22 student council meeting.

The 2019 event had a total profit of $6946.06, a $1829.72 increase of last year’s profits from the same event.
While the total income of this year’s event was less than last year’s, the SU managed to significantly cut their expenses from $8686.60 last year, to $6358.13 this year.

Reducing the cost of production saved $300, while not using Toursec for security saved $750.75.

Ticket sales decreased marginally ($70.44), while bar sales fell by $428.31.

Another event of note from the Sept. 22 council meeting was the ratification of two clubs.

Council voted unanimously to ratify the UPEI Photo Club and the Nursing Research Club, the motion was put forward by Vice President of Student Life Tessa Rogers, and seconded by education representative Sébastien Papineau.

Rogers said students are excited about the photo club.

“The photography club is actually going to be run by [The Student Union’s] photographer Gerrit, a lot of people seem to be interested in it,” she said during the council meeting.

Rogers says the researching club will have a lot of overlap in members with the nursing society but the club will be more focused on research.

“This one is specifically for people who are pursuing research in their nursing degree,” she said.

The next council meeting will be on Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. in room 328 of McDougall Hall.
