Feature Friday: South

By: Alex Molloy

Minami lay still on her bed, wide awake despite being the middle of the night. She closed her eyes hoping that she would soon drift off. AJ had been so angry at her and she didn’t understand why. She was only trying to help her by informing her of possible abusive behaviors. It bothered her that they had almost had a fight. Go to sleep, Minami. You’ll feel better in the morning.

She tossed and turned, trying to find the best position. Across the room she could hear AJ doing something in the bathroom. She stopped moving and focused on the sound of the running water. Then, slowly, her imagination began to take over as she drifted from a state of sleep and being awake. She imagined AJ was taking a shower and that the water was flowing down AJ’s long blonde hair, across her back and down the rest of her body. A warm glow appeared on Minami’s scared face at the thought of seeing her roommate in the shower, an image of which she had never thought of before.

Sometime later, the water stopped running and Minami couldn’t hear AJ. When the silence came, Minami slowly began to relax and she hoped she’d finally fall asleep.

The door to the bathroom creaked opened and Minami could hear AJ’s bare feet walking across the floor. Still, Minami didn’t move.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps ceased. Minami guessed AJ was standing by her own bed, probably fixing it to get in. Then the footsteps started again, only this time they were softer and moving in Minami’s direction. She wondered what A,J was doing. Try as she might, she couldn’t guess what her friend was doing until she heard a whisper in her ear.

“I’m sorry,” whispered AJ.

Minami held her breath as she felt AJ kiss her cheek before walking carefully back to her side of the room and into bed.
