Rejoice.
It’s legal.
After nearly 100 years of prohibition, you can legally light up, suck in a cloud of funky-named weed and relax. But before you do, there are a few things you should know about UPEI’s new Alcohol and Drug Policy.
In the policy it states, “The University is committed to providing a safe, healthy workplace and learning environment. Substance abuse can have adverse effects on a University community member’s work, student and athletic performance, health, and personal safety.â€
Sorry, did you get lost there? Enjoying the legalization already, bud? Turn down the Hendrix.
Obviously, the bottom line is that you can’t work or study at UPEI while impaired. Yes, this includes having a toke at lunch time.
In keeping with UPEI’s Smoke-Free Campus Policy, one of the main things to know is that you can’t smoke on campus, which refers to both cannabis and tobacco.
Bummer. You also can’t turn your dorm room into a grow op, meaning no cultivation of your favourite indica or sativa on campus.
The new policy states that cannabis can be possessed on campus in accordance with provincial and federal laws, and because of the smoking ban, cannabis may only be stored and consumed by means other than smoking in accordance with laws and in a private residence room.
If you use cannabis for medical use, the guidelines at UPEI are the same but may be subject to accommodations.
UPEI also says while attending any university event either on or off campus those community members who choose to light up must do so in a legal and responsible manner in accordance with the policy.
So, smoke responsibly – just not on UPEI campus.
